Justice Anwarul Haque, chairman of the Interna-tional Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1, yesterday lost his battle with cancer as he breathed his last yesterday afternoon at the age of 61.
Confirming the report to the media, ICT Registrar Md Shahidul Alam Jhinuk said Justice Haque died at around 5:30 pm at Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University.Justice Haque left his wife, many relatives and well wishers to mourn his death.
Justice Haque was diagnosed with lung cancer this January and was admitted to hospitals in Singapore and Bangladesh on couple of occasions. After his recent return from Singapore, he was admitted at BSMMU and was under treatment there till his death.
Meanwhile, Law Minister Anisul Huq has expressed deep shock at the death of Justice Haque. In a condolence message, Huq conveyed his heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family members.Justice Haque was born in 1956 in a respectable Muslim family of Dhaka.
Justice Haque joined the Bangladesh Judicial Service on December 1, 1981 as Munsif (Assistant Judge). In his long eminent judicial carrier, Justice Haque served as a Munsif in Mymensingh, Kishoreganj and Feni, and as Munsif- cum-Magistrate First Class at Atpara Upazila under the then Netrokona Sub- Division.
As Sub-Judge and Assistant Sessions Judge (Joint District and Sessions Judge), he discharged his duties in Chittagong and Moulvibazar districts. He was an Additional District and Sessions Judge in Sylhet district. Later, he served as District and Sessions Judge in Chandpur, Lakshmipur and Gazipur districts.
Justice Haque was also the Chairman of the Labor Court-2 in Chittagong. He was elevated as Additional Judge of the High Court Division of Bangladesh Supreme Court on December 12, 2010, and was appointed Judge of the same division on December 10, 2012. He was sitting Judge of the High Court Division of the Bangladesh Supreme Court.
On September, 15, 2015, Justice Anwarul Haque was appointed as the Chairman of the International Crimes Tribunal-1. Prior to his appointment as the Chairman, he worked as a Member of the same Tribunal since March 25, 2012.
