#MeToo, a hashtag that started recently is still trending in full swing. People from all walks of life are breaking their silence on social media to speak about the instances of sexual assault and harassment that they have faced.
Heartbreaking stories shared by women show the magnitude of sexual harassment faced by all over the world in society. The movement was aimed to make people talk about the abuse they faced in public places or even the confines of their homes.
Not just women, men are also keenly participating in the movement. Apart from just stories, several men are tweeting on what they can do to make the society better for women. The revelation set off major outrage and triggered frank discussions about the realities of the harassment many women and men face in the everyday life, and it’s all led to an outpouring of support for victims of sexual assault.
Since The New York Times published an investigative report on Oct. 5 detailing decades of sexual harassment allegations against the Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein, social media has provided a galvanizing platform for women to discuss their experiences. In the aftermath of the story, dozens of women have come forward detailing the trauma, harassment, and abuse they say they suffered at the hands of Weinstein.
Alyssa Milano, whose Charmed co-star Rose McGowan has essentially become the Joan of Arc of the Weinstein scandal, shared a message on her social media channels which says “If all the women who have been sexually harassed or assaulted wrote ‘Me Too.’ as a status, we might give people a sense of the magnitude of the problem.”
The #MeToo movement is not the first to use social media to highlight abuse against women. In 2014, a #YesAllWomen campaign drew notice on social media after a man cited his hatred of women as his reason for killing people in Southern California. The activist Laura Bates started the #EverydaySexism campaign in 2012 to document widespread sexism, harassment and assault.
Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook feeds are seems to be filled with an endless stream of people proclaiming “#MeToo” from all over the world.
