Former Information Secretary Martuza Ahmed has been appointed as the as the Chief Information Commi-ssioner (CIC) replacing Prof Dr M Golam Rahman. President Abdul Hamid made the appointment as per the article 15 of the Right to Information Act-2009.
The Ministry of Information has issued a gazette in this regard yesterday. According to the gazette notification, the government will fix the payment, gratuity and other facilities of Ahmed as the CIC.
He previously served as Additional Secretary of Cabinet Division, Director of Directorate of Military Land & Cantonment, Joint Secretary of Ministry of Environment and Forest and Joint Secretary of Ministry of Land. Hailing from Sunamganj, Ahmad is a BCS Cadre of 1982 Batch.
His predecessor Prof Dr Golam Rahman, a teacher of Mass Communication and Journalism Department of Dhaka University, was appointed as the CIC on 3 February in 2016. He was then serving as the chairman of national news agency Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha.
Although the appointment is for five years, law allows serving the post up to the age of 67. Rahman's tenure expired on January 6 this year. Information Commissioner Nepal Chandra Sharker has been discharging the duties as the acting CIC since then.
