Hazi Md. Kaus Mia, the owner of Hakimpuri Jarda (chewing tobacco), has become the top taxpayer of the country. He started his business in 1950 with 80 taka capital which was taken from his mother. National Board of Revenue (NBR) has given the title of top taxpayer to this simple man three times consecutively.
Kaus Mia was born on August 26, 1931 at Rajrajeshwar village under Chandpur district. He got admitted in Madhubabu's school (currently Madhus-udan High School) in 1936 and studied up to class eight. He is now 86 years old. He set up a stationery shop at Trank Patti of Chandpur town's Puran Bazar at monthly rent of only 3 taka in 1951. Then he took more shops with profit of the business. He started the tobacco business in 1955.
Kaus Mia went to Nitaiganj of Narayanganj wrapping up his 20 years business in Chandpur. There he did business as sole agent of 18 companies. He started tobacco business in 1973 in Narayanganj. In that year, he commenced the business of Shantipuri Jarda with 3-4 workers. Later, he left Narayanganj in 1978 and started the business of Hakimpuri Jarda in 1978.
Hazi Kaus Mia has said it is possible to be the top taxpayer doing business in an honest way. Paying tax is a matter of pride. He has proved this. He has written his name in the list of top taxpayers since 2008. Not only this, he was also named as the top taxpayer by then Pakistani government in 1967. He has been paying taxes to the govern ment since 1958.
According to data of NBR, Kaus Mia has is the top taxpayers for the fiscal 2013-14, 2014-15 and2015-16. He has paid highest tax among 18 lakh taxpayers in the fiscal year 2015-16. As recognition of this, he has been given tax card. He was also in the list of top ten taxpayers eight times. NBR released the list of top 100 taxpayers on Monday last and the name of Hazi Kaus Mia was found at the top of the list.
Kaus Mia said, 'I do business with honesty and pay tax open mind. I earn much profit in my business. I pay the government more taxes. I never evade taxes. Those who earn more and take away money abroad, evades tax. Most of the top businessmen of the country are doing businesses with loans from banks. Though they earn huge money, they can't pay desired taxes due to the payment of the bank loans. But there are many businessmen who evade taxes intentionally, he has added.
He has also said people have become more conscious as earlier. Many have started to pay taxes to protect their dignity. Some pay taxes to avoid harassment. For these reasons, the scope of taxes will be extended.
