Birangana Rama Chowdhury no more

Renowned writer and one of Biranganas of the Liberation War Rama Chowdhury passed away in a city hospital early Monday. She was 79.

"Chowdhury breathed her last at Chattogram Medical College Hos-pital (CMCH) at 4.40 am due to old age complications," Alauddin Kho-kon, her book's publisher and long time friend, told media. 

She had been sufferings from diabetes, high blood pressure and Asthma for long and was undergoing treatment at CMCH since January last, he said.

She was put on life support at ICU around 11 last night after her condition deteriorated, he added. Her body was kept at the Chattogram Central Shaheed Minar at 11 am yesterday as people from all walks of life can pay their last respects to her. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday expressed deep shock at the death of Rama Chowdhury. 

In a condolence message, the Prime Minister recalled her sacrifice and struggle for the great Liberation War.She prayed for the peace of the departed soul and expressed sympathy to the bereaved family.

Rama Chowdhury, the freedom fighter, lost her two sons during the Liberation War, wielded her pen and wrote 19 books, including novel, poetry, articles, alongside teaching in high schools.She will be cremated at her village home at Popadiya village in Boalkhali upazila of the district, khokan added.

Rama Chowdhury lost her husband and two children in the war of liberation in 1971. The Pakistani occupied military personnel also raped her after attacking her home and set the house on fire.

Born on October 14 in 1936, Chowdhury obtained her graduation degree in Bangla Literature from Dhaka University in 1961 and choose to teaching profession.

She authored 18 books including "Ekattarer Jononi', 'Ek Hazar Ek Din Japoner Poddo' and 'Bhab Boichitre Rabindranath'.She earned fame for writing her book "Ekattarer Jononi.
