Crowd at the residence of slain former US protocol officer Xulhaz Mannan -AA
Unknown assailants yesterday hacked two men to death including USAID official and former protocol officer at the US embassy in Dhaka Xulhaz Mannan, a cousin of former foreign minister Dipu Moni. The other victim was identified as one 'Tonoy,' may be a friend of Mannan, police sources said. They were murdered inside a house in capital Dhaka's Kalabagan, two days after a Rajshahi University teacher was murdered in similar fashion near his residence.
Better known for his gay-rights activism, Mannan also edited 'Roopban', the first magazine in the country advocating for the rights of transgenders. Confirming the matter to The Asian Age, Officer-in-Charge of Kalabagan Police Station Mohammad Iqbal said, one of the attackers entered into the building faking his identity as a courier delivery person.
The murders took place inside 'Asia Nibas', the six-storey building on Lake Circus Road, around 5:00pm, DMP Assistant Commissioner (AC) Ruhul Amin Sagar said. Mannan lived in a flat on the first floor of Asia Nibas. At least six men raided his home around 5:00pm and hacked Mannan and another person with sharp weapons, security guard 'Sumon' told media. He also said the assailants, while fleeing, hacked another guard named Parvez Molla. Sumon later admitted Molla to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH). Molla received a sharp weapon injury on the left side of his forehead.
The OC of the Kalabagan police station reported that the assailants had also stabbed an ASI of the police station when they were leaving the scene. In reply of the attack police personnel also opened fire but they missed to shoot the attackers, OC Mohammad Iqbal added. Police could not immediately say who the killers were. The incident occurred hours after Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said Saturday's murder of the university teacher in Rajshahi city and the killing of a retired prisons guard in Gazipur on Monday morning were 'isolated incidents' and the people should not feel insecure.
