Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said that liberty is good but it is not for boys. She made this remark referring to the recent demonstrations in some public universities against the vice chancellors. She called upon all concerned to ensure a congenial environment in all universities so that students can pursue their studies smoothly.
Sheikh Hasina was speaking as chief guest at the 13th national conference of Sramik League on Saturday at the capital's Suhrawardy Uddyan.
Sheikh Hasina said that Bangladesh is one of the very few countries in the world where education cost is very low. Public universities are autonomous institutions but the funds are provided by the government, she further said. Each student has to spend only 150 taka per month as academic expenditure, she commented.
She added that public universities provide world-class education at such a low cost while private universities are highly expensive. There should be discipline in all universities, she asserted.
Sheikh Hasina urged everyone not to create undue commotions by making adverse remarks on universities and higher education authorities. Students should not waste their time going on strike frequently, she told the audiences. She said that students should make the best of their efforts to ensure their own future by educating themselves properly.
