High Court declares gambling illegal


The High Court on Monday declared illegal gambling in 13 upscale clubs including Dhaka Club in the country.A High Court division bench comprising Justice Sheikh Hassan Arif and Justice Md Mahmud Hassan Talukder passed the order, declaring absolute a rule issued earlier in this regard.

The court also ordered authorities concerned to take effective steps immediately to stop gambling in these 13 clubs including-Dhaka Club, Gulshan Club, Banani Club, Officers' Club Dhaka, Dhaka Ladies Club, Cadet College Club Gulshan, Chittagong Club, Chittagong Seniors Club, Narayanganj Club and Khulna Club.

The High Court on December 4, 2016, issued the rule, asking to explain as to why it shall not declare illegal gambling in these 13 clubs. The court had come up with the order after holding primary hearing on a writ filed by Supreme Court lawyers Barrister Samiul Huq and Adv Rokon Uddin Mohammad Faruk.

Barrister Redwan Ahmed moved the writ before the court, while Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kazal argued for Dhaka Club. Deputy Attorney General Bipul Baghmar stood for the state.
