The extended loop construction of Khilgaon-Flyover has been completed and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will formally inaugurate it today. The premier will go to Kamlapur using the loop. Afterwards, the portion will be opened for vehicular movement, Khilgaon Flyover Project Director (PD) AK Azad told The Asian Age. Local Government Engineering
Department (LGED) completed the loop construction. The loop is the extended part of Khilgaon Flyover project. Traffic connection will be easier to Malibagh Rail Gate to Rajarbagh Police line after opening the loop, AK Azad hoped.
"PM is scheduled to go to Kamlapur for inaugurating green-red intercity train on Rajshahi-Dhaka route on Saturday. She is expected to travel the loop on 11:30am on her way to the inauguration," the PD said. Navana did the construction under the supervision of LGED. According to the project plan, the work was to complete in December of 2014. However, the deadline was extended one year for several complexities including land accusation. The project was supposed to be completed by 2015 according to the extended deadline. But the authority took extra six months to open it for vehicular movement. Engineer of Navana Construction Kazi Shamim Ahmed told The Asian Age that they faced difficulties in constructing the structure as the site is under Bangladesh Railway.  "We had to adjust time with the rail authority. Moreover, at one of the ends of the loop has Shahjahanpur Bazzar which created an interruption to get heavy construction materials into the site," he added. These issues delayed the deadline of the project, he claimed.
The government undertook the Khilgaon Flyover project to address the public sufferings caused by intolerable traffic congestions in Dhaka city in 2000. Accordingly LGED constructed the flyover which was opened for traffic from March 2005. However, the implementation was not done as per original design because the subsequent government (2001-2006) dropped one of the important loops (Saidabad side) from the project. This has seriously constrained the objectives and expected benefits of the flyover as originally planned. Large volume of traffic coming from Progoti Sarani, Mothertek, Kadamtali, Basabo, Shepaibag, Meradia and Goran could not use the existing flyover and they do not have any other uninterrupted access toward Motijheel and Rajarbag. To overcome the constraints, LGED proposes to construct the Saidabad loop as it was incorporated in the original plan in order to increase the traffic carrying capacity and maximize the benefit of a complete flyover. In 2012, the extended work started with Tk 46 crore more. The extension has newly built 23 pillars and 22 slabs.
