The project was approved by the government on December 16, 2012 with the slogan 'Save time, save oil, reduce traffic jams and Metrorail' on the special initiative of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The term was then from July 2012 to June 2024. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the construction work on June 26, 2016.

According to the report, the progress from Diabari to Agargaon is 8 percent. As of July 31 this year, the overall progress of the project has been 70 percent. On the other hand, the progress of work from Uttara to Agargaon has been 7 percent. According to the latest progress report of the project, erection work of 18.56 km viaduct has already been completed out of 20.10 km viaduct. At the same time the work of electrical wiring is in the final stage. The construction of infrastructure of 9 stations of the first part is almost completed.
The construction of sheds of the first 5 stations has been completed. Accelerator ladders have been installed at 3 stations, but have not been commissioned yet. Construction of other stations is progressing fast. The overall work progress of these 9 stations is about 90 percent. When the train starts running, it will first run from Uttara to Pallabi. Later it will be extended to Agargaon. According to DMTCL sources, the formality of running the train on the viaduct has started.
This movement will continue till the day before the inauguration. Now it is being investigated whether there is any problem in the viaduct, whether the electricity is working properly, whether there is any mechanical, technical, electrical problem somewhere. Metrorail will run on 100% electricity. A total of 19 issues including signal and communication will work together in the field of railways.
Between June and December 2022, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate 3 mega projects. The Padma Bridge will be inaugurated in June. Later, the Bangabandhu Tunnel under the Karnafuli River in Chittagong and the Metro Rail will be opened to the public in December. The term of the Metrorail project is till June 2024. However, the government is in talks to complete the entire Metrorail project as soon as possible.
