The number of people infected with deadly coronavirus is soaring by leaps and bounds in Bangladesh as the country logged 9,500 fresh cases, the highest daily count since August 12, and 12 more fatalities in 24 hours till 8am on Wednesday.
The daily positivity rate has now stood at 25.11 percent according to regular bulletin issued by the Directorate General of Health Services.The caseload has now stood at 16,42,294 and death toll has surged to 28,176, the DGHS further said.
As many as 37,830 samples were tested across the country in the last 24 hours. The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected currently stands at 1.72 percent.The recovery count rose to 15,54,268 after another 473 patients were discharged from the hospitals during the past one day.
The total number of Omicron cases in the country stood at 55 as of Sunday, according to the data released from Germany in the Global Initiative on Sharing All Influenza Data (GISAID), an international database organization for the virus.Amid the growing concern over the new Omicron variant of the coronavirus, the government on January 13 came out with the restrictions on movement of people and public transport vehicles.
A large number of the population has also been vaccinated with the country crossing the landmark of administering 100 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines on December 1, nearly in 10 months after kicking off a nationwide campaign.The health authorities in Bangladesh have marked 12 districts, including Dhaka, as high-risk zones because of their high Covid-19 infection rates.
The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) published the list after analyzing a week's worth of countrywide Covid-19 data, from January 10-16.The 11 other high-risk districts are Chittagong, Gazipur, Rajshahi, Jessore, Kushtia, Bogra, Dinajpur, Rangamati, Lalmonirhat, Khagrachhari and Panchagarh.
The indomitable Covid-19 has spread to all 64 districts in Bangladesh. The country reported its first case of the virus on March 8, while the first death was recorded on March 18.The novel coronavirus broke out in China's Wuhan city in late December, 2019 and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.
