The dengue situation in Bangladesh has taken an alarming turn as the number of cases and fatalities are on the rise creating panic among people across the country.

820 more people were hospitalised due to the mosquito-borne disease across the country in 24 hours till Saturday morning, while two more patients died in the same period, according to a press release of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

"This year, 67 deaths were reported from dengue disease while 269 died last year," the daily statement of the DGHS said. With the latest cases, the total number of patients rose to 12,118.

Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) on Saturday urged the government to declare a 'public health emergency' over the deteriorating dengue situation in the country.

In a statement, TIB also called upon the government to immediately formulate a roadmap and implement it in this regard.
On the dengue situation, TIB placed a 15-point recommendation to the authorities concerned including Dhaka North City Corporation and Dhaka South City Corporation for their reconsideration.

Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) recently issued comprehensive instructions on prevention of dengue infection as the mosquito-borne tropical disease has increased sharply this year.

Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne illness that occurs in tropical and subtropical areas of the world. Outbreaks of the disease are usually seasonal, peaking during and after the rainy season.
