SK Sinha is waiting for green signal to return home

SK Sinha is waiting for green signal to return home

Former Chief Justice (CJ) Surendra Kumar Sinha also known as SK Sinha, who was forced to move away from Bangladesh about seven years ago as a chief justice still holding his post, has said he is prepared to return to Bangladesh and to prove that all the cases filed against him are completely false and fabricated if the interim government led by Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus ensures his security.

"I will go back to Bangladesh. I'm now waiting for a green signal," he said in an exclusive interview with a prominent newspaper from a foreign country via a video call on 14 August 2024.

Ex Chief Justice Sinha, known as SK Sinha, described how then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had kept him under tremendous pressure and forced him to leave the country through Directorate General of Forces Intelligence or DGFI officials as he strived to establish independence of judges belonging to the country's Judicial Service at all levels, defying Sheikh Hasina's orders and unlawful interventions.

SK Sinha stated that the conflict between him and ousted PM Sheikh Hasina kicked off as he took some initiatives to prevent the lower courts from granting bail to infamous gangsters, human traffickers, smugglers and some other corrupted officials including politicians after being appointed the 21st Chief Justice of Bangladesh in January 2015. The dispute further deteriorated as SK Sinha instructed the then Law Ministry to formulate the disciplinary rules for lower court judges keeping powers in the hands of the Supreme Court instead of the executive departments and refused to issue verdict over the constitutions' 16th amendment case (SC judges' removal) in favour of the Awami League government in July 2017. Afterwards, totally hostile circumstances compelled SK Sinha to leave Bangladesh 13 October 2017, according to his allegations.
