Nazrul Islam Mazumder was often seen in photographs with ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during last fifteen years. -Collected
A lot of reshuffles, realignments and shakeups have taken place since the interim government led by Nobel laureate Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus took oath on 8 August 2024 since ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina escaped to India on 5 August.
A broad number of leaders and activists who served the interests and vile purposes of the immediate past fascist government have been meanwhile arrested including former ministers and Members of Parliament (MPs). Sheikh Hasina's private sector and investment adviser Salman F Rahman, ex Law Minister Anisul Huq and heinous bank racketeer Nazrul Islam Mazumder have been arrested too in the wake of the downfall of Awami League from Bangladesh's ruling echelons.
However, mysteriously the prosecution process of former Nassa Group Chairman, terminated Exim Bank Chairman and Bangladesh Association of Banks (BAB) President Nazrul Islam Mazumder has been proceeding at a very slow pace. Political sources have informed that a vested quarter is making all possible immoral attempts to obstruct the trial of Nazrul Islam Mazumder. At the same time Nazrul Islam Mazumder and his cohorts are using connections with a certain political party which is currently in a good form to safeguard Nazrul Islam Mazumder from being subjected to proper legal punishment.
Nazrul Islam Mazumder was the top sponsor of overthrown Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her deposed ruling party Awami League. Nazrul Islam Mazumder grossly abused his power as BAB President and comprehensively financed the malicious political activities and human rights violations that took place under Sheikh Hasina's dictations. Nazrul Islam Mazumder compulsively extorted heavy amounts of money from different private banks every year and donated the unlawfully mugged funds to fatten up Sheikh Hasina's coffers and to fill out his own monetary caskets. Several Bengali and English newspapers frequently published reports on Nazrul Islam Mazumder's direct links with constant money laundering and terror finance but Nazrul Islam Mazumder strangulated those media outlets utilizing his hotline with Sheikh Hasina and a former Army Chief who was in a highly powerful post of Bangladesh Army when Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia was evicted from her Dhaka Cantonment residence in 2010. That particular Army Chief also collaborated with Awami League in rigging the 2014 elections in an unabashed manner. Nazrul Islam Mazumder kept up sound rapport with this vicious ex Army Chief for gobbling up banks and financial institutions and illegally transferring money to overseas locations from 2009 to 2024. For this reason suspicion and conundrums have glared up over the contrived slow pace of the prosecution sluggishness of Nazrul Islam Mazumder who was the kingpin in spoiling most of the private banks during last 15 years.
If the present governing system fails to punish atrocious Nazrul Islam Mazumder quickly in an exemplary way, good governance, rule of law, justice, accountability and integrity have almost no way out to become established in Bangladesh's state machineries including banks and financial sector and it will also plunge the country's economic prospects into insurmountable gutters. Nazrul Islam Mazumder again and again forced newspapers and online portals to disable corruption reports from the media outlets' web versions by means of his unholy nexus with Sheikh Hasina's office and a branded spy agency which was demonized by Sheikh Hasina in a Gestapo style that prevailed in Nazi Germany during World War II.
Even Nazrul Islam Mazumder's hired gangsters and some unscrupulous intelligence officers threatened to shut down The Asian Age press in November 2019 when the newspaper published an investigative and evidential report on Nazrul Islam Mazumder's brazen financial vices. An absolutely unprincipled bank bandit like Nazrul Islam Mazumder took photographs with ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on different occasions and those pictures have since then gone viral on social media.
Trustworthy sources have even reported that Nazrul Islam Mazumder lovingly called Sheikh Hasina "Beyain" (sister-in-law) in line with his bonds with Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh.
Under these circumstances, questions and doubts have surfaced among conscious and patriotic citizens why Nazrul Islam Mazumder is not being rigorously grilled to pry off facts and figures about the rampage that crippled banks during last 15 years.
Professor Anu Muhammad of Jahangirnagar University said that the spirit of the July Revolution will become lackluster if branded criminals and thugs are allowed to avoid punishment through loopholes in the convoluted process of lawsuits.
Professor Dr. Mainul Ahsan, Economics Department of Chittagong University commented that rapid justice and legal actions need to be executed against the beneficiaries and benefactors of the fascist rulers who were overthrown in August 2024.
The fascist agents left behind by Sheikh Hasina cannot be wiped out without subjecting Nazrul Islam Mazumder to a well-deserved prison sentence and ensuring his on-the-button penalty which will restrain other culprits from committing similar malfeasance and transgressions. Now it is time to see whether Bangladesh's statutory codes are implemented without fears or favours while a non-political interim government is in power. Before concluding, a few words from Winston Churchill can be borrowed "All great things are simple and the most crucial one can be defined with only one word-justice".
