Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed a case against terminated Exim Bank Chairman and ex President of Bangladesh Association of Banks (BAB) Nazrul Islam Mazumder over illegally amassing colossal wealth equal to 781 crore 31 lakh 22 thousand 454 taka. ACC Director General Md. Akter Hossain conveyed this information to journalists on Sunday. Nazrul Islam Mazumder is also the proprietor of Nassa Group. He was one of the most heavily condemned businessmen during ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's regime for money laundering and terror finance during last 15 years. Financial sources often referred to Nazrul Islam Mazumder as Sheikh Hasina's right hand when it was about plundering banks and transferring countless amounts of money from Bangladesh to foreign countries by unfair means.
According to the case lodged by ACC yesterday, Nazrul Islam Mazumder owns palatial houses at Gulshan Avenue, Tejgaon Industrial Area and New DOHS which have a market price of 532 crore 87 lakh taka. There are shares of 67 crore 52 lakh taka on Exim Bank's name and 30 crore 98 lakh taka shares on different business enterprises under Nassa Group which belonged to Nazrul Islam Mazumder. So far assets worth 1 thousand 132 crore 66 lakh taka have been identified as Nazrul Islam Mazumder's regal wealth which he accumulated in every possible unethical way while Sheikh Hasina was in power from 2009 to 2024.
Even Nazrul Islam Mazumder once boastfully said in 2019 that the net worth of his total asset volume is 67 billion USD. The Asian Age published this statement from Nazrul Islam Mazumder in a few investigative and evidential reports during the previous years.
ACC has charged Nazrul Islam Mazumder with abusing power, bribery, extortion and corruption by means of which he became one of the richest bankers in the country and one of the heavyweight financial thugs. Nazrul Islam Mazumder went into hiding after unseated Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina escaped to India on 5 August 2024. However, Nazrul Islam Mazumder was arrested on 02 October 2024 from the capital's Gulshan area.
Prominent citizens and financial experts have stated that the prosecution of big bandits like Nazrul Islam Mazumder should be speeded up and stern penal sentences should be meted out to him who ravaged and crippled Bangladesh's banking system cashing on his hot connection with Sheikh Hasina and her accomplices.
Nazrul Islam Mazumder is also facing some more cases of corruption and exercising political interventions on banks and financial regulators which he did in a scot-free way from 2009 to 2024.
Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit or BFIU ordered all banks to freeze bank accounts and transactions belonging to Nazrul Islam Mazumder and his spouse Nasreen Islam. Nazrul Islam Mazumder was also branded for extorting enormous sums of money from private banks and thus he constantly bribed Sheikh Hasina and her family members. During last several years Nazrul Islam Mazumder's immoral activities hit news headlines over and over again but nobody dared to take any action against him throughout Bangladesh because of his intimate unholy alliance with Sheikh Hasina and nexus with a particular intelligence force which was demonized by the immediate past regime.
On 4 February 2025 another 52 bank accounts belonging to Nazrul Islam Mazumder, his wife Nasreen Islam, his daughter Anika Islam and his son Walid Islam were confiscated. Moreover, Crime Investigation Department (CID) is at present investigating charges slapped on Nazrul Islam Mazumder which shows that he laundered almost 30 lakh dollars to the United States under cover of exporting readymade garments (RMG).
