Bangladesh Bank (BB) has dissolved the boards of directors of three banks-Meghna Bank, NRB Bank and NRB Commercial Bank. Bangladesh Bank issued letters to these three banks on Wednesday (12 March 2025) with certain orders. BB officials have told journalists that this decision has been made to release these banks from the influence of the overthrown Awami League fascist leaders and to establish good governance. These three banks were launched in 2013. Bangladesh Bank approved the operations of these three banks in 2013 under political consideration.
BB Spokesman Arif Hossain Khan informed journalists about the dissolution of the above three banks' boards on Wednesday. Reportedly Awami League central leader HN Ashiqur Rahman was Meghna Bank's Chairman. Former Land Minister Saifuzzaman Chowdhury and his close associates hold high posts in this bank's board of directors.
Uzma Chowdhury and Tanvir Ahmed have been made director and representative director in Meghna Bank. Mamunul Haque and Rajab Ali, Nazrul Islam, Habibur Rahman and Ali Akhter Rizvi have been appointed director posts in Meghna Bank. These newly appointed directors will elect the bank's new chairman. NRB Bank's Chairman was Mohammad Mahtabur Rahman. Mahtabur Rahman and another few directors of NRB Bank did not return to Bangladesh since ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina escaped to India on 5 August 2024. Iqbal Ahmed OBE, Ferdaus Ara Begum, Sheikh Md. Selim, Quamrul Islam Chowdhury, Sheikh Matiur Rahman, Shareef Nurul Ahkam and Mizanur Rahman have been made new directors and independent directors of NRB Bank.
Awami League leader SM Parvez Tomal was NRB Commercial Bank (NRBC) Chairman. Ali Hossain Prodhania has been made new NRBC Chairman. He is former Managing Director of Bangladesh Krishi Bank. Earlier on another 11 banks' boards of directors were dismantled when the Awami League ruling party became disintegrated through Sheikh Hasina's runaway on 5 August 2024. These banks were Islami Bank, First Security Islami Bank, Union Bank, Global Islami Bank, Bangladesh Commerce Bank, National Bank, Al Arafah Islami Bank, IFIC Bank, United Commercial Bank and Exim Bank.
