Army Chief stresses polls by December

Chief of Staff of Bangladesh Army General Waker Uz Zaman has said that the next national elections should be held by December 2025. General Waker Uz Zaman stressed this point on Wednesday (21 May 2025) while speaking at an Officers Address in Dhaka Cantonment, different media outlets have reported.

General Waker Uz Zaman talked about the much debated Rakhine Corridor and Chittagong Sea Port issues too. According to the Army Chief, political parties and all other concerned stakeholders should have been consulted before making comments on provision for a humanitarian corridor for Myanmar's Rakhine province.

About handing over the operations and maintenance of Chattogram Sea Port to foreign companies, General Waker Uz Zaman said that these matters need to be sorted out by an elected government through negotiations with all political parties, domain experts, public representatives and prominent citizens.

On Rakhine Corridor, General Waker Uz Zaman categorically pointed out that this matter is better to be handed down to elected political parties who will form a government through upcoming polls.

General Waker Uz Zaman sounded very tough on mob violence affirming that Bangladesh Army from now on will crack down hard on all forms of anarchy by mob gangsters.

General Waker Uz Zaman extended cordial thanks and appreciation to the military services members of all ranks and files for working dexterously for keeping up law and order throughout Bangladesh under unprecedented circumstances. He expressed hope that the Armed Forces will carry out their electoral duty professionally and efficiently in days to come.

General Waker Uz Zaman mentioned that he is not updated about the interim government's reform initiatives. He added that nobody sought his opinions or views about reforms.
