Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) standing committee member Salahuddin Ahmed has said that there is no valid reason to defer elections beyond December 2025 under any circumstances. There are no reforms which can't be completed within one or two months, Salahuddin Ahmed further said.
Salahuddin Ahmed made the above comments on Monday after a meeting with Bangladesh interim government's Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus. The meeting was held in the capital's Foreign Service Academy.
Salahuddin Ahmed said "We believe national elections can be organized by December 2025. Reforms which are directly associated with elections should be implemented with top priority. There are no reforms which can't be materialized within one month or so through executive orders".
However, Salahuddin Ahmed stated that constitutional reforms will take time. He added that constitutional amendments need to be carried out by an elected government.
According to Salahuddin Ahmed, most of the political parties have called upon Dr. Muhammad Yunus to hold elections by this year's December. Salahuddin Ahmed expressed hope that Dr. Muhammad Yunus will take all political parties' opinions into serious consideration. BNP is always open for negotiations and exchange of views, Salahuddin Ahmed told journalists. vBNP leaders Ismail Jabiullah
and Ruhul Quddus were present at the meeting. Jamaat Nayeb-E-Ameer Dr. Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher, Jamaat Assistant Secretary General Hamidur Rahman Azad, National Citizens Party Convener Nahid Islam and Gono Sanghati Andolon's Chief Coordinator Junayed Saki attended the meeting too.
