Total 88 noted Bangladeshi journalists, authors, teachers, researchers, cultural luminaries and human rights activists living abroad have expressed deep worries about the ongoing torment on media professionals in Bangladesh. These esteemed dignitaries informed through a media statement on Wednesday (2 July 2025) that unprecedented instances of repression on journalists and mass media have been going on during last several months.
These expatriate Bangladeshi scholars and litterateurs exposed their acute discontent over the prevailing strangulation of freedom of press in Bangladesh which has been going on since 5 August 2024. According to these famed individuals, written and unwritten restrictions are being imposed on newspapers and social media and thus media professionals across Bangladesh are being subjected to tremendous injustice and human rights violations.
The press release states that during last 10 months at least 412 journalists have been wrongly accused in murder cases and other repressive cases throughout police stations in Bangladesh. 39 journalists have been arrested so far since August 2024. Even the Anti Corruption Commission is being misused by vested quarters to seize bank accounts belonging to honest journalists and travel bans have been slapped on them, the expatriate Bangladeshis have complained.
The press note from reputed expatriate Bangladeshis added that a huge number of journalists have lost their jobs since August 2024.
