Editor of daily English newspaper New Age Nurul Kabir has expressed astonishment saying on Tuesday that his name was published with wrong spellings in the gazette notification of Press Council without seeking his permission. Nurul Kabir stated this complaint yesterday (29 July 2025) on his Facebook profile.
Nurul Kabir blamed the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting for putting his name as a member of the Press Council which was misspelled and he was not consulted before doing so. Nurul Kabir wrote on Facebook that in the past government authorities requested him a number of times to stay in the Press Council which he humbly declined. But this time neither the government nor anybody else cared about seeking his permission, Nurul Kabir wondered. Nurul Kabir urged the authorities concerned to remove his name from the Press Council immediately.
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on Monday declared the names and particulars of the following journalists in the renewed Press Council for 2 years-Obaidur Rahman Shaheed, Dawlat Akter Mala, Md. Shahidul Islam, Editor of The Daily Star Mahfuz Anam, New Age Editor Nurul Kabir and Bonik Barta Editor and Publisher Dewan Hanif Mahmud, Financial Express Editor Shamsul Haque Jahid, Dainik Purbokon Editor Ramiz Uddin Chowdhury and Newspapers Owners Association of Bangladesh (NOAB) Adviser Akhter Hossain Khan.
The new Press Council committee also includes Bangla Academy President Mohammad Azam, University Grants Commission Secretary Md. Fakhrul Islam and Bangladesh Bar Council Vice Chairman Jainul Abedin.
