A conspiracy is going on to disrupt electoral process: Mirza Fakhrul

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday said some political parties are pushing for a referendum before the next parliamentary election which is a part of conspiracy to disrupt the electoral process.

He came up with the allegation while addressing a rally in front of the BNP Central Office at Nayapaltan in Dhaka marking the historic Revolution and Solidarity Day.

Mirza Fakhrul said, "I want to say very clearly, there is a conspiracy going on the elections. The election and the referendum must be held on the same day, and that election must be held in February 2026. Otherwise, the people of Bangladesh will not accept."

"It is unfortunate that the interim government, which we fully supported, is now itself creating a situation so that the election may be disrupted," he said.

BNP secretary general insisted that the referendum should be held on Election Day to save public money and maintain the importance of the main vote.

"If you have to vote twice, a lot of money will be spent, and it will dampen the importance of the main election," he added.

Mirza Fakhrul also criticised Jamaat and some other political parties for putting pressure to hold the referendum before the election.

Fakhrul said the spirit of November 7 is the spirit of democracy. "Our party, the BNP, was born through reform. Our leader, President Ziaur Rahman Bir Uttam, initiated that reform."

He said BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has given the nation a new Magna Carta through his 31-point reform outline. "We will move forward with that goal. We will take part in the upcoming election and, Insha'Allah, by winning it, we will build a new Bangladesh."
