Government expenses have shot through the roof

News coverage by different media outlets shows that the expenses being splurged by the interim government in Bangladesh have shot through the roof. Bonik Barta reported on Friday that the government's spending propensity has escalated far more than previous years. Reportedly the government's expenditure on operational costs and development programs reached 1 lakh 4 thousand 963 crore taka from July to September during 2025-2026 fiscal year.

Last year operational costs and development programs incurred an expenditure of 95 thousand 165 crore taka. During 2021-2022 fiscal year 72 thousand 52 crore taka was spent on operational costs and development activities.

Financial sources have informed that the highest figures of expenses have been spent on agriculture, food and Economic Relations Division (ERD). In Agriculture Ministry during last one year the government's expenditure has reached 7 thousand 495 crore taka. In Food Ministry, expenses have amounted to 5 thousand 803 crore taka within a year. On the other hand, ERD caused expenses of 2 thousand 966 crore taka during the same period. Daily Bengali newspaper Ajker Patrika has reported that some dead, missing and living overseas people have been named in charge sheets who belong to ousted political party Awami League. Law and order experts have said that when missing and dead people are named in case documents, it's a reflection of negligence in duty by investigating officers. Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Nurul Huda said that dead and non-resident people are named in cases due to professional inefficiency of police officers who conduct inquiries. Such things harms people's confidence on police force, Nurul Huda further said.

Allegations show that acid violence decreased slightly across Bangladesh but this crime has raised its ugly head once again after the Covid 19 pandemic. Moreover, mob attacks and assaults on girls have hit news headlines over and over again during last one year or so. Seven women were subjected to acid terror during the first ten months of 2025. Three of the victims have died. During last 5 years, 84 women came under physical attacks while ten of them succumbed to their injuries.

In recent times repression on girls has mounted at an alarming rate over household hostility, dowry and declining love offers in various parts of Bangladesh. Robbery, gang rape and mugging have increased too since August 2024.
