Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was sentenced to death yesterday by Justice Golam Mortuza in the International Crimes Tribunal or ICT 1. The above verdict was handed down over two cases which convicted Sheikh Hasina of crimes against humanity and genocide during the July-August mass uprising in 2024 which unseated the then ruling party Awami League and Sheikh Hasina from power on 5 August 2024.
Justice Golam Mortuza hails from Fulgazi upazila belonging to Feni district. He was born on 15 January 1960. Golam Mortuza passed BCS exams in 1982. He retired from service as a District and Sessions Judge in January 2019. Reportedly Golam Mortuza held the position of a District and Sessions Judge for 19 years during his professional career.
He was appointed as a Justice in the High Court Division on 8 October. Golam Mortuza passed LLB and LLM from Dhaka University during his academic life. Another two Judges in the International Crimes Tribunal are Justice Shafiul Alam Mahmud and retired District and Sessions Judge Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury. Earlier on, Supreme Court decided to reconstitute the International Crimes Tribunal to prosecute individuals accused of carnage on thousands of July 2024 demonstrators.
