Bangladesh was jolted by a 5.7 scale earthquake on Friday morning leading to the deaths of more than 10 people while hundreds of victims were wounded. Adding panic to the scary situation, another mid quake shook Dhaka city yesterday evening (Saturday 22 November 2025) which was measured 4.3 on Richter scale. Mominul Islam, Acting Director of Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) said that these are aftershocks which perhaps signal more tremors.
Mominul Islam commented to journalists that Friday's earthquake shook several parts of Bangladesh so intensely due to the weak structure of soil. Mominul Islam further said that after an earthquake the following 72 hours are very important. Saturday's minor quake was caused by the bigger tremor which took place on Friday, the weather scientist stated. Mominul Islam urged everyone to remain cautious instead of getting frightened.
Mominul Islam said that the soil category in this region is very deconsolidated which generated higher trembles on Friday when the earthquake hit Bangladesh. Impaired soil condition across Bangladesh is responsible for longer and wider shocks, Mominul Islam stated.
Mominul Islam laid high emphasis on sound and well-organized preparation for earthquakes since Dhaka is an overpopulated city. He also called upon the authorities concerned to take tougher steps to persuade people to follow building code and to avoid unplanned urbanization.
