Fire service issues earthquake guidelines

Fire Service and Civil Defense has issued eight points guidelines for people across Bangladesh to protect themselves during earthquakes. Fire Service and Civil Defense Senior Staff Officer to DG and in charge of Media Cell Shahjahan Sikder sent a press release regarding the matter on Sunday.  It includes eight points about what to do during earthquakes: 1. If you feel an earthquake is taking place stay calm instead of getting panicked. If you are on the ground floor of a building, quickly get out and take shelter in an open area.

2. If you are in a multi-stored building, follow the drum cover hold method. Get down under a table or desk and hold on to the pole or take shelter next to a column or under a beam as well as cover your head with a pillow or similar something.

3. Never use elevators during an earthquake and turn off rapidly gas and electricity connections after the earthquake stops.

4. Stay away from risky furniture and hanging anything and stay away from balconies, windows, bookshelves, cupboards, fan or hanging heavy objects. Keep essential items including torch, helmet, essential medicine in your surrounding at that time.

5. If you are outside, take shelter in an open area and avoid near trees, electric poles and high rise buildings or walls.

6. If you are in a car, stop in a safe place. Stop your car away from over bridges, flyovers, trees and electric polls. Stay inside your car until the earthquake stops.

7. Avoid going near damaged buildings, bridges or weak structures.

8. It is possible to keep damage limited during earthquakes by the combined efforts and awareness of everyone. Fire Service officials also urged people to contact the organization's hotline number 102 in case of any emergency.
