Tarique Rahman promises state guided by 'Islamic justice' if BNP returns to power

Tarique Rahman has pledged to build a "justice-based" Bangladesh guided by the ideals of the "Prophet Muhammad" if the BNP returns to power.

He made the promise while addressing the National Imams-Khatibs Conference 2025 on Sunday.

"Even during the Jahiliyyah era (age of ignorance), those who opposed the Prophet recognised his justice. Muslims, and non-Muslims alike, had no doubt about his fairness," Tarique said.

"Preserving this ideal of justice in state and governance will be the BNP's guiding principle, In Sha Allah. In the next elections, we seek the prayers and support of all respected imams, khatibs, muezzins, scholars, and spiritual leaders to establish a justice-driven Bangladesh," reports bdnews24.com.

He added, "I ask for your prayers -- for my mother, for our party members and supporters, and above all, for the nation."

The conference, organised by the Joint Imams-Khatibs Council, was held at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre in Agargaon. Committee Secretary Mufti Azharul Islam presented seven key demands of the imams and khatibs. Tarique expressed support for their call to establish service rules, describing the demand as "highly justified".

He criticised practices in many mosques where employment of imams and muezzins depends on committee discretion rather than merit.

He assured that, if the BNP assumes power, implementing service rules for imams, khatibs, and muezzins will be a priority. He also urged the religious committees to submit detailed recommendations on each demand to facilitate the party's action.
