Ex DGFI chief Mamun Khaled detained

A Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court on Thursday placed former Director General of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), retired Lieutenant General Sheikh Mamun Khaled, on a five-day remand in a case filed with Mirpur police station in Dhaka.

Metropolitan Magistrate Md Siddiq Azad passed the order after Detective Branch of police Sub-Inspector Kafil Uddin produced him before the court seeking a seven-day remand for interrogation.

According to allegations, on 19 July 2024, the victim, Delowar Hossain, 40, was present with students and people in support of the anti-discrimination student movement at the Mirpur-10 Fruit Market area in Dhaka.

At that time, around 500 to 700 activists of Awami League affiliate organizations, including the named accused and unidentified others, allegedly opened indiscriminate fire from different directions under the instruction of detained suspect Sheikh Mamun Khaled, using both local weapons and foreign firearms, in an attempt to suppress the peaceful protest, said the plea.

Delowar was allegedly shot and collapsed at the scene. He was first taken to the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases in critical condition and later shifted to City Care General Hospital in Shyamoli on July 20 for advanced treatment. He died while undergoing treatment on 21 July 2024.

However, Sheikh Mamun Khaled's lawyer told journalists yesterday that the allegations placed on his client are orchestral and fabricated and he expressed hope that Sheikh Mamun Khaled will be released if fair trial is not manipulated.

The victim’s wife, Mosammat Liza, filed the murder case with Mirpur Model Police Station on July 6, 2025.

A team of Detective Branch (DB) police detained Sheikh Mamun Khaled early on Thursday from his residence in Mirpur DOHS around 1:15am. He was later taken to the DB office on Minto Road in the capital. Sheikh Mamun Khaled was also Vice Chancellor, Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP) located in Mirpur Cantonment, Dhaka.

The arrest of the former three-star army officer comes about 48 hours after the arrest of another former Lt. General Masud Uddin Chowdhury in Dhaka.

Discussions also revolve around former Army officer Mamun Khaled’s role during the 1/11 period, including allegations that the DGFI was drawn into political activities.

Following the fall of the Awami League regime on 5 August 2024, amid a student-led mass uprising, the Anti-Corruption Commission launched an inquiry against Mamun Khaled over corruption allegations of amassing illegal wealth.

Following the ACC petition, a Dhaka court in May 2025, during the interim government period, imposed an international travel ban on Mamun Khaled and his wife from leaving the country.

There are also allegations against him that he was involved in corruption, including misappropriation of funds from the Jolshiri Housing Project, and is linked to the so-called ‘Ayna Ghor’.

Sheikh Mamun Khaled served as director of the DGFI from December 2007 to December 2010 and later as its Director General from June 23, 2011, to March 7, 2013.

Sheikh Mamun khaled  was stationed at Cumilla Cantonment as a Colonel until December 2007, subsequently joining the DGFI Signals Wing later that month. In June 2008, he succeeded Brigadier General Fazlul Bari according to bdnews24.com. Mamun khaled  remains the only retired DG of DGFI during Hasina  regime who  returned to the country in September 2024.
