A Supreme Court lawyer has served a legal notice on the government, demanding action within three days against those allegedly involved in killing a dog by throwing it to a crocodile at a shrine in Bagerhat. The incident took place on 8 April 2026 and was captured on video, which shows a crocodile dragging the dog underwater. Social media users alleged that the dog's legs had been tied and that it was deliberately thrown into the water to create viral content.
Advocate Khandaker Hasan Shahriar sent the notice to senior government officials, requesting immediate steps to protect animals amid rising incidents of cruelty.
The notice was addressed to secretaries of the Cabinet Division, home, local government, and finance ministries, as well as the NBR chairman, DG of Livestock Services, and chief controller of Imports and Exports.
The lawyer outlined 21 specific measures to be implemented within 30 days, including amending Animal Welfare Act 2019 to increase punishments and ensure speedy trials; removing VAT and taxes on imported animal food and pet travel; establishing designated animal cemeteries in every union parishad, municipality, and city corporation; ensuring that government veterinary hospitals provide free rabies and flu vaccinations seven days a week and introduce 24 hour emergency services; forming a National Animal Welfare Authority to oversee monitoring, licensing, and enforcement; and creating a special task force to prevent animal cruelty nationwide.
If the government fails to act, a writ petition will be moved before the High Court seeking necessary directives, according to the legal notice.
