BNP lawmaker Fazlur Rahman has said members of freedom fighters' and martyrs' families "cannot join Jamaat-e-Islami", saying it would be a "double offence" if any of them did so.
The Kishoreganj-4 MP made the assertion during a discussion on the motion of thanks on the president's address.
"I say it again, members of martyr families cannot be in Jamaat. If they do, it is a double offence," he said.
Following his remarks, the Jamaat-led Opposition Bench members protested loudly in the House during the session chaired by Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, reports bdnews24.com.
At one point, the speaker stood up and urged members to remain seated and calm down.
"The entire nation is watching, it is being broadcast live. You are all elected representatives of the people," he said in a bid to pacify the deputies.
Fazlur also referred to the Liberation War, the Aug 5 political movement, Jamaat, Pakistani collaborators Al Badr, police killings, and incidents of arms and police station looting in his speech.
Expressing mixed views on the president's address, he said the history of the Liberation War should have been presented in greater detail.
"The history of the Liberation War is deeper than the ocean," he said.
While paying respect to those killed in the Aug 5 movement, he said he does not belittle it, but refused to describe it as a revolution.
"The Aug 5 event is not a revolution, it is a mass uprising. Comparing that with the Liberation War is wrong," he said.
The freedom fighter added, "Comparing the Liberation War with a one-month movement is like comparing the Pacific Ocean with a well, or the Himalayas with a small hill."
"When such comparisons are made, the Liberation War is undermined," he added.
