More awareness is necessary about tobacco products

Tobacco use remains one of the leading causes of preventable disease and death worldwide. Despite widespread awareness campaigns, millions of people continue to consume tobacco in various forms, including cigarettes, smokeless tobacco, and emerging products like e-cigarettes. The harmful effects of tobacco extend far beyond the individual user, impacting families, communities and entire healthcare systems. One of the most well-known consequences of tobacco use is its severe impact on physical health. Smoking damages nearly every organ in the body. It is a primary cause of life-threatening diseases such as lung cancer, heart disease, and chronic respiratory conditions. The toxic chemicals in tobacco smoke—more than 7,000 in total—include carcinogens that directly alter DNA and promote the development of cancer. Long-term smokers often experience reduced lung capacity, persistent coughing, and increased susceptibility to infections.

Tobacco raises blood pressure, reduces oxygen flow, and increases the risk of heart attacks and strokes. Even occasional smoking can harm blood vessels and disrupt normal heart function. Smokeless tobacco products, often perceived as safer alternatives, are not harmless either. They are linked to oral cancers, gum disease, and tooth decay, proving that all forms of tobacco carry serious health risks. Beyond physical illness, tobacco use has psychological and social consequences. Nicotine, the addictive substance in tobacco, alters brain chemistry and creates dependence. Users often find it difficult to quit, even when they are fully aware of the risks. This addiction can lead to anxiety, irritability, and withdrawal symptoms when trying to stop. Financial strain is another overlooked issue, as regular tobacco consumption can become an expensive habit, particularly for low-income households. Secondhand smoke is another major concern. Non-smokers who are exposed to tobacco smoke inhale many of the same toxic chemicals as smokers. Children are especially vulnerable, facing higher risks of asthma, respiratory infections, and sudden infant death syndrome. Pregnant women exposed to tobacco smoke may experience complications, including low birth weight and developmental issues in infants.

The environmental impact of tobacco is also significant. Cigarette butts are among the most common forms of litter worldwide, contributing to pollution in streets, waterways, and oceans. Tobacco farming involves the use of harmful pesticides and contributes to deforestation, further damaging ecosystems. In recent years, alternative products like e-cigarettes have been marketed as safer options. However, growing evidence suggests that they still pose health risks, particularly to young users. These products can serve as a gateway to nicotine addiction and may lead to the use of traditional tobacco products. In conclusion, the harmful effects of tobacco products are extensive and multifaceted, affecting health, society, and the environment. Reducing tobacco use requires strong public health policies, education, and individual commitment.
