Europe Day to be celebrated in Dhaka with grand diplomatic and cultural confluence

Europe Day 2026 is scheduled to be celebrated today in Dhaka through a grand event bringing together diplomats, policymakers, business leaders, academics, cultural personalities and media professionals in a vibrant reflection of friendship and cooperation between Bangladesh and the European Union (EU).

Diplomats from different foreign embassies, high commissions and consulates stationed in Bangladesh have been invited to attend the celebration. Senior government officials, prominent members of the business community, distinguished academic scholars, renowned cultural figures and leading media professionals are also expected to participate in the event.

This year's Europe Day celebration places special emphasis on the heritage, traditions, historical legacies and diverse culinary cultures of the member countries of the European Union. Organizers believe the event will serve as an important platform for cultural exchange and enhanced people-to-people connectivity while highlighting the rich diversity and unity of Europe.

Europe Day, observed annually on 9 May, commemorates peace and unity in Europe and marks the anniversary of the historic Schuman Declaration, which laid the foundation for what later evolved into the European Union. Meanwhile, Honorary Consul of Malta Shoeb Chowdhury recently paid a courtesy call on the European Union Head of Delegation to Bangladesh, Ambassador Michael Miller. During the meeting, the two discussed the significance and evolving role of the European Union in contemporary global geopolitical dynamics.

They also exchanged views on bilateral relations between Malta and the European Union, alongside various dimensions of reciprocal cooperation between the European Union and Bangladesh. Issues relating to trade, diplomacy, cultural engagement and broader international collaboration received attention during the discussion.

It may be noted that Malta became a member state of the European Union in 2004, further strengthening the bloc's Mediterranean and international partnerships.

The Europe Day celebration in Dhaka is expected to reaffirm the enduring partnership between Bangladesh and the European Union while promoting greater understanding of Europe's multicultural heritage and shared global aspirations.
