Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan has announced that a media policy will be formulated and a media commission will be established in Bangladesh between July and August.
He made this announcement during a weekly press briefing held on Tuesday at the conference room of the Department of Information.
Prime Minister's Adviser on Information and Broadcasting Dr. Jahed Ur Rahman and the ministry's Additional Secretary Md. Yasin were also present at the event.
During the briefing, the minister spoke about the newspaper wage board and the overall management of the media sector. He stated, "Ensuring that journalists receive their salaries on time and protecting them from unprofessional conduct are responsibilities of the government. At the same time, supporting newspaper owners is also part of our duties."
The minister also said that the government is working on creating a specific and well-organized legal framework to resolve disputes between journalists and media owners.
He further stated that under the existing laws, there are no specific provisions against false cases, unethical journalism, or attempts to create anarchy in the country through such activities. As a result, victims are often forced to seek remedies under different laws.
However, he added that once the proposed Media Commission is established, these legal limitations can be completely addressed. Those who attempt to create disorder through unethical journalism will also be brought under a legal framework through this commission to ensure justice.
