Don't mix up Islami Bank with religion: Home Minister

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has called upon everyone not to tie up Islami Bank with religious sentiments. Salahuddin Ahmed made this appeal to the nation on Tuesday while talking about a point raised by Jamaat Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman in Parliament.

Salahuddin Ahmed said "Islami Bank does not stand for the religion Islam. Even Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir does not mean Islam. Neither does Jamaat-E-Islami mean Islam."

The Home Minister further said "Please don't tag Islam with everything." Dr. Shafiqur Rahman's point was about returning Islami Bank's shares to its clients and to stop undue intervention in operating the bank.

A group of people using a banner called "Islami Bank Customers Forum" demonstrated in front of Islami Bank corporate office in the capital's Motijheel a few days ago. Dr. Shafiqur Rahman complained at Parliament yesterday that Islami Bank's shares were robbed from its clients. In response Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed stated "Necessary steps will be taken to reserve Islami Bank to its authentic clients in due course."

Salahuddin Ahmed urged the Finance Minister and Bangladesh Bank Governor to publish all relevant facts and figures regarding the shares of Islami Bank.
