Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman said on Saturday to the government "You are insulting and ignoring the mandate of nearly 70% of the country's people. The public will not sit idle if you deliberately delay in implementing people's verdict on the referendum". Demanding quick implementation of reforms in accordance with the referendum's mandate, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman stated that no government can remain in power for long by ignoring the voters' choice. He warned that if the government harms the country and humiliates people by making wrong decisions, the masses will move against the ruling authorities.
Dr. Shafiqur Rahman made these remarks on Saturday at a rally in Chittagong organized by the 11-party alliance, a coalition led by his party. It may be recalled that with the goal of state reforms, the interim government of Dr. Muhammad Yunus took the initiative to draft and implement the "July National Charter."
Due to severe disagreements between Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Jamaat-E-Islami along with its allies over how the reforms would be executed, the matter was ultimately put to a referendum. The referendum was held alongside the 13th parliamentary elections on 12 February 2026. In the referendum, 68.59% of the votes were cast in favor of the "Yes" vote. According to the July Charter, the process of forming a Constitution Reform Council to implement the referendum's mandate came to a halt due to a lack of interest from BNP.
However, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman slammed the government for intentionally consuming time over the execution of the referendum results. The Jamaat Ameer warned BNP that the country's people will carry out another agitation like the July Uprising if the government does not honour people's ballots in the referendum.
