Islami Bank customers demand unbiased directors

Representatives of Islami Bank Conscious Customers Forum wanted to meet Bangladesh Bank Governor Mostaqur Rahman on Wednesday but they failed to meet the central bank chief. Later on they had a meeting with Deputy Governor Kabir Ahmed and urged the Deputy Governor to restructure Islami Bank board with transparent and unbiased directors quickly.

Islami Bank customers also requested Kabir Ahmed to seize and sell S. Alam's shares and to reschedule clients' loans with this money. Islami Bank Conscious Customers Forum Convener Professor Nur Un Nabi told journalists yesterday about the meeting with Deputy Governor Kabir Ahmed.

Islami Bank customers also handed over a memorandum with a number of demands to Bangladesh Bank. Professor Nur Un Nabi said that customers want Islami Bank to run smoothly and to ensure the safety of depositors' funds. He further said that he and his companions presented a memorandum citing seven particular demands to Deputy Governor Kabir Ahmed.

According to Professor Nur Un Nabi, Deputy Governor Kabir Ahmed assured Islami Bank clients about appointing honest and competent directors to lead the bank's executive committee. Nur Un Nabi warned on Wednesday that customers will go for tougher programs if Islami Bank board of directors is not properly reorganized shortly.

It may be added that Islami Bank's Managing Director Omar Faruk Khan resigned on 24 May 2026. News about withdrawing 3 thousand crore taka by depositors from Islami Bank triggered panic and fury among ordinary clients. The bank's Chairman Khurshid Alam also stepped down a few days ago. On the other hand, Jamaat Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman expressed support for Islami Bank's angry depositors. Under these circumstances the central bank dissolved Islami Bank's board of directors and appointed Mohammad Zahir Hossain on 14 June 2026 to regulate the bank's operations.
