Ignoring referendum verdict creates 'political crisis': Jamaat Ameer

Leader of the Opposition and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman on Wednesday said that a political crisis has been created in the country as the government has ignored the verdict of referendum.

He came up with the remarks while addressing a post-budget views-exchange meeting with journalists at the LD Hall of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.

Shafiqur Rahman said, "The referendum had given a clear public mandate for constitutional reform, but the government's decision to pursue constitutional amendments through a special parliamentary committee contradicts that mandate."

"The Opposition has compelled to take to the streets with programmes after failing to secure sufficient discussion in Parliament on this issue. As we have not got chance at Parliament, we will go to the parliament of people. It needs permission from the Speaker to discuss the issue in Parliament, but does not require such permission in the parliament of the people," he added.

Leader of the Opposition said, "Discussion is essential in parliamentary politics. Finally, we have to reach a consensus. It is crucial to implement necessary reforms with a view to bring back a healthy democratic trend. Otherwise, the country will lose its path."

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Nayeb-e-Ameer ATM Azharul Islam, Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar, Assistant Secretary General Hamidur Rahman Azad were present at the meeting, among others.
