Education Minister Dr ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon on Thursday said there should be a 'regulation' to stop non-government teachers from participating in local government elections.
He came up with the remarks while speaking as chief guest at the formal announcement ceremony of the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) System Transformation Grant (STG) and Multiplier Grant in the capital.
Milon said, "Teachers will remain in the teaching profession and if they participate in the elections, they will go to the profession of politics - if the two run together, the quality of education will be diminished."
"If they want to participate, they should quit their jobs. The investment and training that the state is providing for teachers should be properly used in building a beautiful nation," he added.
The event was jointly organised by the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education, Unicef, Unesco and the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
The programme was chaired by Primary and Mass Education Secretary Md Sakhawat Hossain and attended by Primary and Mass Education State Minister Bobby Hajjaj, Prime Minister's Education Adviser Dr Mahdi Amin, Education Secretary Abdul Khalek, and representatives from the British HighCommission, Unicef, Unesco, ADB and GPE.
