Four Deputy Attorney Generals face show cause letters

Four Deputy Attorney Generals face show cause letters

The Attorney General's Office on Sunday issued show-cause notices to four deputy attorneys general, asking them to explain within three working days why disciplinary action should not be taken against them over allegations of misconduct and the obstruction of the Attorney General's official duties.

The notices, served by administrative officer Md Nasir Uddin on behalf of attorney general Md Ruhul Quddus Kazal, were issued to DAGs Md Rafiqul Islam (Montu), Md Ashikuzzaman (Nazrul), Md Jahirul Islam (Sumon), and Muhammad Masud Rana.

According to the notices, the four DAGs allegedly behaved in an unruly and threatening manner inside the Attorney General's office at around 1:45 pm on Sunday while he was performing his official duties. The office alleged that they intimidated the Attorney General in the presence of litigants and fellow law officers, and warned that an 'undesirable incident' could occur.

It added that the incident was captured on CCTV cameras and constituted serious misconduct as well as interference with government work.

Responding to the allegations, DAG Md Jahirul Islam later told New Age that the four, along with several other DAGs, had not been assigned court responsibilities since the incumbent Attorney General assumed office on March 25, following the Bangladesh Nationalist Party-led government taking office on February 17.

He stated that they had gone to request court postings, but the Attorney General questioned their performance in the office's research section before declining their request.

Jahirul claimed that this exchange led to a heated verbal altercation, which was brought under control after additional attorney general Aneek R Haque intervened and escorted them out of the office.
