Ziaur Rahman assassination: Fugitive convict Mozaffar held after 45 years

The Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) on Thursday arrested Major (Retd) Md. Mozaffar Hossain in connection with the killing of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman. Confirming the matter, Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Detective Branch chief Shafiqul Islam said that he (Mozaffar) was arrested from the capital's DOHS area around midnight on Wednesday.

Police said Mozzaffar was later handed over to the Bangladesh Army after the completion of the necessary legal formalities for court martial proceedings.

Mozzaffar had been absconding since President Ziaur Rahman was assassinated by a group of dissident army officers at the Chattogram Circuit House in May 1981.

On the early morning of May 30, 1981, a group of army officers attacked the Chittagong Circuit House, where then-president Ziaur Rahman was staying, and killed him.
