ABB proposal for higher banking service fees sparks public anger

ABB proposal for higher banking service fees sparks public anger

The Association of Bankers Bangladesh (ABB) has proposed an increase in fees for a wide range of banking services, triggering widespread criticism and public anger across the country. The proposal, announced on Sunday, aims to revise charges on several common

banking facilities, including account maintenance, ATM transactions, cheque processing, fund transfers, and digital banking services.

According to banking officials, the proposed fee hike has been recommended in response to rising operational costs, increasing investment in digital infrastructure, and inflationary pressures affecting the financial sector. The ABB argues that commercial banks need additional revenue to improve customer services, strengthen cybersecurity, and maintain modern banking systems. The proposal has been submitted to the relevant regulatory authorities for consideration.

However, the announcement has sparked strong reactions from customers, consumer rights groups, and business organizations. Many people believe that increasing banking charges at a time of high inflation will place an unnecessary financial burden on ordinary citizens. Small business owners and low-income customers have expressed concern that higher service fees could discourage people from using formal banking channels and digital financial services.

Several customers voiced their disappointment outside bank branches in the capital, saying that they already pay multiple charges for maintaining accounts and carrying out routine transactions. They argued that banks should focus on improving customer service and reducing unnecessary delays instead of increasing fees. Consumer rights activists also questioned the justification for the proposed hike, claiming that many banks continue to earn significant profits despite economic challenges.

Financial analysts have offered mixed opinions on the proposal. Some experts acknowledged that banks are facing increased operating expenses due to technological upgrades and regulatory compliance. However, they stressed that any increase in service charges should be reasonable, transparent, and carefully evaluated to avoid harming customers. They also suggested that banks explore cost-saving measures before passing additional expenses on to account holders.

Meanwhile, officials from the banking sector stated that the proposal does not mean the new fees will be implemented immediately. The final decision will depend on discussions with the central bank and other relevant authorities. They assured customers that any approved changes would be announced in advance.

The issue has generated widespread debate on social media, with many users calling on the authorities to protect consumers' interests. As discussions continue, customers across Bangladesh are hoping that policymakers will strike a balance between ensuring the financial sustainability of banks and safeguarding the affordability of essential banking services.
