Measles outbreak: Death toll tops 800


The number of deaths linked to confirmed measles and suspected infections in Bangladesh has now stood at 803 as six more children died from measles-like symptoms in the country in the last 24 hours, according to the data provided by the health ministry on Wednesday.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) bulletin on Wednesday said 133 more people tested positive for measles in the 24 hours from 8am Sunday bringing the total number of laboratory-confirmed infections to 14,841.

The health authority has been releasing regular updates on the viral outbreak since Mar 15.

With the latest update, the number of suspected measles deaths has risen to 708 while the number of  laboratory-confirmed measles deaths remained unchanged at 95.

A total of 904 new suspected measles cases were reported during the period, bringing the cumulative number of suspected cases nationwide to 120,352.
