India invites PM Tarique Rahman to attend BRICS Summit as special guest
The Indian government has invited Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to attend the 18th BRICS Summit as a special guest in New Delhi in September.
India, the current chair of BRICS, is set to host the summit in New Delhi from September 12-13.
The invitation was conveyed to Dhaka this week, and Bangladesh - which is not a member of BRICS and does not have observer status with the grouping, diplomatic sources said. Speaking to reporters at the foreign ministry on Thursday, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam said the ministry had received the invitation from the Indian side and forwarded it to the Prime Minister's Office.
Responding to a question on Bangladesh-India relations, Shama said Bangladesh, as a democratic country with a democratically elected government, wants peace and stability across the region.
"This is our position, and we want peace and stability to be maintained in our region," she said.
The State Minister said they expect India, as a large democratic state with a democratic government, will look into its people's issues and will move towards a solution. India is hosting this year's Brics Summit under the theme "Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability", reflecting what New Delhi describes as a people-centric and humanity-first approach. BRICS comprises Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates, while its partner countries
include Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, Uzbekistan and Vietnam.
