Public Transports in Dhaka City Must Be Increased in Numbers
Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, is one of the most densely populated cities in the world. Every day, millions of people travel to offices, schools, colleges, universities, hospitals, and markets. However, the existing public transport system is unable to meet the growing demand. The shortage of buses and other public transport services has resulted in severe traffic congestion, overcrowding, long waiting times, and inconvenience for commuters. Increasing the number of public transports has become an urgent necessity for ensuring smooth and efficient urban mobility. One of the biggest challenges faced by city residents is the lack of adequate buses during peak hours. Passengers often have to wait for long periods before finding a bus with available space. Many are forced to travel in overcrowded vehicles, risking their safety and comfort. Women, children, senior citizens, and people with disabilities face even greater difficulties while commuting.
An increased number of well-managed buses would significantly reduce these problems and make daily travel more convenient. The shortage of public transport also encourages the use of private cars and motorcycles. As more people choose personal vehicles, traffic congestion becomes worse, resulting in longer travel times and increased fuel consumption. Air pollution also rises due to the growing number of vehicles on the roads. Expanding public transport services would encourage more citizens to leave their private vehicles at home, reducing traffic jams and improving environmental conditions. Affordable and reliable public transport is essential for the economic development of Dhaka. Workers who arrive late because of transport problems often experience reduced productivity, while businesses suffer from delays in the movement of employees and customers. Students also miss classes due to transportation difficulties. A larger and more efficient public transport network would save valuable time, improve productivity, and contribute to the city's overall economic growth.
The government has already introduced modern transportation projects such as the metro rail, which has brought significant improvements to urban travel. However, these developments alone cannot satisfy the transportation needs of the city's rapidly growing population. More buses, improved route management, regular maintenance, trained drivers, and strict enforcement of traffic regulations are equally important for creating a safe and dependable public transport system. Dhaka's future depends on a modern and efficient transportation network. Increasing the number of public transport vehicles, while ensuring quality service and proper management, would greatly improve the daily lives of millions of people. A stronger public transport system would reduce congestion, lower pollution, save time, and promote sustainable urban development. Investing in better public transportation today is an investment in a cleaner, more productive, and more livable Dhaka for future generations.
