Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir has announced that the government has set an export target of US$63.4 billion for the fiscal year 2026-2027. The target includes US$55.2 billion in goods exports and US$8.2 billion in services exports, with a projected 15 percent growth in both sectors.
He made the announcement on Sunday while briefing journalists at the conference room of the Ministry of Commerce.
The minister said that despite global economic uncertainty, ongoing geopolitical tensions and challenges in international markets, Bangladesh's export sector has the potential to rebound through the creation of a business-friendly environment, increased investment facilitation and the simplification of government service processes.
Abdul Muktadir also said that negotiations on free trade agreements (FTAs) with South Korea and the United Arab Emirates are in the final stage. He added that the government aims to conclude FTAs with several other countries within this year. The minister further expressed hope that formal negotiations on a free trade agreement with the European Union will begin soon.
Emphasizing the importance of export diversification, the commerce minister noted that around 85 percent of the country's total exports currently depend on the ready-made garments (RMG) sector. To reduce this dependence, he said, the government is giving special priority to the leather and leather products, footwear, shipbuilding, ship recycling, light engineering and information technology sectors.
Responding to a question on the ongoing gas crisis, Abdul Muktadir said that gas supply constraints continue to prevent parts of the industrial sector from fully utilizing their production capacity. He added that the government is working to improve the situation by establishing additional LNG regasification units.
Commerce Secretary Md. Ataur Rahman Khan and Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) Vice Chairman Mohammad Hasan Arif were also present at the briefing.
