Latif Siddiqui arrested in Shapla Chattar case
Police on Wednesday arrested former minister Abdul Latif Siddiqui in connection with a crimes against humanity case over the 2013 crackdown on a Hefazat-e-Islam rally at Shapla Chattar in capital's Motijheel.
Latif Siddiqui was arrested at 6pm on Wednesday from his Gulshan residence in Dhaka upon a warrant in a case at International Crimes Tribunal, DB chief Mohammad Shafiqul Islam confirmed.
"Latif Siddiqui has been arrested in a case filed with the International Crimes Tribunal. There was an arrest warrant against him and he was detained accordingly," he said.
Earlier in the day, Latif Siddiqui expressed his intention to surrender before the court in the case. After appearing before Dhaka's Chief Metropolitan Magistrate court, he said he had decided to surrender.
He added that if he was not arrested beforehand, he would appear before the International Crimes Tribunal next week and seek bail.
On July 27, the prosecution submitted formal charges against 41 people, including ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Latif Siddiqui, before the ICT in connection with the Shapla Chattar crackdown.
According to the prosecution, 58 people were killed at four locations, including Dhaka, during the Hefazat rally on May 5, 2013.
The investigation agency has identified 32 victims in Dhaka, 20 in Narayanganj, five in Chattogram and one in Cumilla.
