July sees highest dengue deaths in 6 months
July has seen the highest number of dengue deaths this year with 36 fatalities recorded so far. The month has also seen the highest number of fresh cases over the past six months.
According to the regular bulletin from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), a total of 15,310 dengue patients have been identified across the country from Jan 1 to Friday, with a total of 54 deaths. Of the caseload, 9,206 patients were identified in July alone, bdnews24 reports.
This week the DGHS recorded 2,670 new cases and 14 deaths. In the 24 hours until 8am on Friday, one death from dengue was registered, while 153 new patients were admitted to the hospital.
DGHS data says that 1,081 dengue patients were logged in January, 409 in February, 353 in March, 640 in April, 714 in May, and 2,907 in June.
January saw two deaths, February saw two, March saw one, and June saw 13.
The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) saw 11 hospital admissions over the past 24-hour period, while the Dhaka South City Corporation saw 15. The rest of the Dhaka division saw 50 new hospital admissions over the period.
Four people have been admitted to hospitals in Barishal, 69 in Chattogram, and four in Khulna.
The sole death occurred in the Barishal Division. Meanwhile, 154 dengue patients have recovered and been discharged from the hospital in the past day. According to the DGHS, out of 15,310 patients admitted to hospitals since the beginning of the year, 14,089 have recovered and been released.
The DGHS has maintained data on hospitalisations and deaths of dengue patients since 2000. In 2023, 321,179 people were hospitalised with the disease. That year also saw the highest number of dengue deaths at 1,705.
In 2025, more than 400 people died of dengue, and around 102,000 confirmed cases were recorded.
