Distance Learning Programs Should Be Immediately Restarted
Bangladesh has made remarkable progress in expanding access to education over the past few decades. However, many students, particularly those living in remote areas or facing financial and social challenges, continue to experience disruptions in their education. In this context, restarting a nationwide distance learning program has become an urgent necessity to ensure that every child has equal opportunities to learn, regardless of location or circumstance. The importance of distance learning became evident during the COVID-19 pandemic, when educational institutions remained closed for extended periods. To reduce learning losses, the government introduced lessons through television, radio, and online platforms. Although these initiatives faced challenges such as limited internet access and shortages of digital devices, they demonstrated that alternative modes of education could successfully complement traditional classroom learning. Today, the need for distance education extends far beyond emergency situations. Every year, thousands of students miss classes because of floods, river erosion, cyclones, illness, family responsibilities, or economic hardship. Pupils living in the country's chars, haor regions, hill tracts, and other geographically isolated areas often struggle to attend school regularly. A well-designed distance learning program can ensure continuity of education for these learners while reducing inequalities in educational access. Modern technology offers numerous opportunities to make distance learning more effective than ever before. Television lessons, educational radio broadcasts, mobile learning applications, digital classrooms, recorded lectures, and interactive online platforms can provide quality educational content to students across the country. For families without reliable internet access, offline digital materials and community learning centres can help bridge the digital divide. Distance learning should not replace classroom education but rather complement it. Teachers can use virtual platforms to provide additional lessons, revision classes, homework support, and career guidance beyond regular school hours. Such blended learning can improve students' understanding, strengthen independent learning habits, and enhance digital literacy-an essential skill in today's knowledge-based economy. Successful implementation requires coordinated efforts from the government, educational institutions, teachers, development partners, and telecommunication service providers. Investments in affordable internet services, teacher training, digital infrastructure, and locally relevant educational content are essential to ensure that no learner is left behind. Parents should also be encouraged to support children in using distance learning resources effectively. Bangladesh's vision of becoming a smart, knowledge-driven nation depends on an educated and digitally skilled generation.
