Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh, is known as the country's political, economic, and cultural center. However, the poor condition of its roads has become a major concern for residents and visitors alike. Rough and potholed streets not only create daily inconvenience but also damage the city's image as a modern capital.
Many roads in different parts of Dhaka remain broken throughout the year. Large potholes, uneven surfaces, and damaged pavements make travelling difficult for motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians. During the rainy season, these potholes fill with water, making them almost invisible. As a result, accidents frequently occur, causing injuries and even loss of lives. Vehicles also suffer serious damage, increasing maintenance costs for owners.
Traffic congestion, already a severe problem in Dhaka, becomes worse because of damaged roads. Drivers are forced to slow down or take alternative routes, leading to longer travel times. Public transport passengers face discomfort every day, while emergency vehicles often struggle to reach their destinations quickly. Such conditions reduce productivity and waste valuable working hours.
The poor state of the roads also affects the city's economy. Business activities are disrupted due to delays in transporting goods and services. Foreign investors and tourists may develop a negative impression of Dhaka after experiencing its poor infrastructure. A capital city should reflect the country's progress and development, but damaged roads create the opposite image.
Although road repair projects are undertaken from time to time, many of them lack proper planning and supervision. Newly repaired roads are often dug up again for utility work, leaving them in worse condition. Corruption, poor-quality construction materials, and inadequate maintenance further worsen the situation. Authorities should ensure better coordination among different agencies to avoid unnecessary road damage.
To restore Dhaka's dignity as a capital city, the government must give priority to durable road construction and regular maintenance. Strict monitoring of construction quality, proper drainage systems, and timely repair of damaged roads are essential. Public awareness and responsible use of roads can also contribute to preserving infrastructure.
In conclusion, rough and potholed streets are more than just an inconvenience; they tarnish the image of Dhaka as the nation's capital. Immediate and effective action is needed to improve road conditions, ensure public safety, and uphold the prestige of the city. A modern capital deserves roads that match its importance and aspirations for development.
