High Court disposes of 57,232 old cases in 11 days
The High Court (HC) has disposed of 57,232 old cases, including 50,325 old criminal miscellaneous cases through 14 criminal motion benches in 11 working days.
Disclosing the matter though a press release, Supreme Court Public Relations Officer Md Shafiqul Islam said a total of 57,232 old cases were disposed of by 14 criminal motion benches of the High Court Division in just 11 working days since May 7. Of these, 50,325 were old criminal miscellaneous cases.
The press release further said as part of a special drive launched following the directive of Chief Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury, the criminal motion benches and writ motion benches are disposing of old cases to reduce case backlog.
"The special initiative, undertaken to ensure speedy justice for litigants, reduce the case backlog and enhance the efficiency of the judiciary, has resulted in the disposal of a significant number of old cases," it added.
Case backlog has emerged as a major challenge for the country's legal and judicial system. According to the Bangladesh Supreme Court, the number of pending cases across the country stood at 47,42,731 as of December 31 last year.
Concerned officials expressed optimism that proper implementation of the ongoing initiatives would significantly ease the burden.
To reduce case backlog, the government has taken initiatives to increase the number of courts and judges. A total of 871 new courts have been established and 232 judicial posts created, while the process to create 304 more posts is underway. Recruitment of 150 civil judges is also progressing, alongside efforts to appoint support staff.
