Dhaka, one of the most crowded cities in the world, is facing a serious environmental problem: a shortage of trees and green spaces. With rapid urbanization, many trees have been cut down to make room for roads, buildings, shopping centres and other construction projects. As a result, the city is becoming hotter, more polluted and less comfortable for its residents.
Trees play an essential role in maintaining a healthy urban environment. They absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, helping to improve air quality. They also trap dust and reduce harmful pollutants in the atmosphere. In a densely populated city like Dhaka, where traffic fumes and industrial emissions are major sources of pollution, trees can provide a natural solution.
Another important benefit of trees is that they help reduce urban heat. Concrete buildings, asphalt roads and vehicles absorb heat during the day, making Dhaka significantly warmer. Trees provide shade and cool the surroundings through a natural process called transpiration. More trees along roads, beside buildings and in residential areas could therefore make the city more pleasant.
Trees also help control noise pollution. Rows of trees can act as natural barriers against the sounds of traffic and construction. In addition, green spaces provide places where people can walk, exercise, relax and spend time with their families. Parks and tree-lined streets can improve both the appearance of the city and the quality of urban life.
The authorities should take immediate steps to increase Dhaka's greenery. New trees should be planted along roads, highways, school grounds, parks and public spaces. Existing trees must be protected from unnecessary cutting. Development projects should include plans for maintaining trees and creating green areas. Citizens can also contribute by planting and caring for trees in their neighbourhoods.
Schools, universities, businesses and community organizations should organize tree-planting campaigns and encourage people to understand the importance of urban forests. The government should also enforce strict laws against illegal tree cutting and ensure that replacement trees are planted whenever mature trees must be removed.
Dhaka urgently needs a greener future. Trees are not merely decorations; they are essential for clean air, cooler surroundings, biodiversity and a healthier life. If the government and citizens work together, Dhaka can become a cleaner, cooler and more livable city for present and future generations.
